Environment
Being a business that is reliant on Mother Nature and having a clean environment to grow its produce Sumich is very conscious of its' impact on the environment. To that end Sumich’s carrot farm in Lancelin is the largest commercial horticultural farm in Australia to run at times 100% from wind energy.
With the strong afternoon sea breezes in summer the geographical location of the Lancelin farm made it an ideal place for Sumich to install 10 x 500kW wind turbines in 2012. Now, in summer during what is usually its highest period of demand for electricity Sumich can reduce its carbon emission by harnessing the wind to produce its power.
Seeing the benefits of renewable energies Sumich has now invested in solar panels for its Kwinana packing shed. With the large roof space of the packing shed Sumich has installed a 100kW solar panel system to power its packing operations.
Other ways Sumich looks after the environment is by always ensuring it follows the best farm practices available for each product it grows. Sumich is constantly researching and staying up to date the latest techniques and improvements in farming, harvesting, packing and storing practices to ensure Sumich continues to be an environmentally responsible business.
